I find this useful but my retention and comprehension suffers. Does it improve over time? Useful for fiction maybe but not for some things that require attention. Any thoughts?

It will improve over time. Trying to hold objects, subjects, verbs, adjectives in your mind over multiple sentences could be helpful. Everyone thinks differently though and you would probably do best by figuring out a strategy that works for you by experimentation

I watched this about a month ago, great tips in there. You have great SEO on that topic. Has helped me increase my speed by like 1.5-2x with comprehension in tact.
I find that reading too slow can hurt comprehension just as much as reading too fast.

Also, listen to the TF podcast at 1.5X then bump to 2X speed as your comprehension improves. It literally makes you smarter and improves cognitive function
