btw, https://bitbucket.org/jmcgrew/zilf/wiki/Home … is the best-supported open-source ZIL compiler that I know of. I don't know whether it's rated to compile this historical source, but someone must be trying it already.

The Lisp nature of ZIL evaporates at compile time, sadly... I think Cornerstone's language and VM were closer to the real deal, but so far they're unexplored.

But it's very much an imperative language, for all the functional syntax. An odd beast. I think they were going for an easiest-way-to-convert their existing codebase.
