This was a hard year in higher ed & in life in general. We need some time to regroup. Hike in the desert & sit on the beach in places where there is no Zoom. Look for the series in July & August - we've got some great reviews & Q&As coming on some truly fantastic new books.

Oh, hi. You may have noticed that unlike most Memorial Day weekends, & I haven't announced the books for this year's African Politics Summer Reading Spectacular. It's coming; I promise.

These measures will come to haunt Texas Republicans. The Texas electorate is rapidly changing, and they will be on the losing side of these outrageous, undemocratic maneuvers before too long. Before voting, GOP legislators should think hard about how this could - and will - end.

Going outside the bounds on makes it easier to overturn an election. The new section says if you don’t like the outcome — sue and even if you can't prove the alleged fraud actually resulted in a win, you can overturn the results using a newly created lower standard.

The Nikole Hannah-Jones situation has me thinking about all the people who are weeded out at the application, hiring, annual review, third-year review, and tenure process that we never hear about.

Very helpful thread to understand what’s going on in Goma (Congo) today, and why the city had to be evacuated although the volcano eruption is over. Friends from Goma, I’m keeping you in my thoughts & sending you much strength. 💙

In the latest, and most audacious effort yet to boost California’s flagging vaccination rates, state officials on Thursday announced what appears to be the largest inoculation incentive in the nation: the chance for 10 residents to win $1.5 million apiece.

Un Jour Nouveau (A New Day) is another local, faith-based Goma organization that I trust. Leaders are busy helping others evacuate & can certainly use donations to support this work & the recovery to come.
