The numbers for cats are based on estimates in the US only. A metastudy was published in Nat. Comm. : https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms2380 … It goes without saying that many of the numbers are rough estimates and cannot be traced back to the original source.

The numbers are compiled based on estimates derived from various sources on the web. The global number in research is an extrapolation: https://speakingofresearch.com/facts/animal-research-statistics/ … https://www.hsi.org/news-media/statistics/ … For the numbers we eat, an article of the WEF provides insights:https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/02/chart-of-the-day-this-is-how-many-animals-we-eat-each-year/ …

The animals used in experiments in the US underestimated: "It is important to note that these statistics do not include rats, mice, birds or fish, as these animals are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act "
-
The world-wide estimate of 100 million/year land-animals includes the assumption that the real numbers in the US are likely to be 20 to 30 times higher than the 1 million reported under the Animal Welfare Act.

Despite being someone who swallows about a dozen pills a day that help me move through the world (Parkinson's patient) that were made available from countless animal experiments of the past, I still struggle with this ethical dilemma. Thank you for giving a little more context.

Yes, very true. In NL we kill ~80k animals per hour for consumption and ~500k per year for exps. But, two wrongs don’t make a right. Therefore, i think in the long run it’s better to focus on why we do exps, what we gain from them, and what we will miss if we don’t.

If you're looking for a source, you can find similar numbers reported at Speaking of Research. One additional fact: 90% of the animals in the 'exp' category are rats or mice.https://speakingofresearch.com/facts/statistics/ …
