Why is Mortal Kombat still decided as a martial-arts tournament ONLY? Like after all those centuries, why haven't the Elder Gods opened it up to something more like a full-scale Olympics? Maybe a spelling bee? Mathletics? Mahjong? Texas Hold'em?
Mortal Kombat's story was pretty much a coin-op developed idea and it shows. Like the game and respect it's creators, but they didn't go into this knowing they were going to have to create an entire metaverse out of the thing.
