Absolutely. Being fat, in many people's eyes immediately makes you lazy, stupid, and altogether less than. Man or woman, it affects both sexes negatively. For men, I'd assume it makes people think you're weak, less manly. And as you lost weight, people regarded you as stronger?
I would say people took weight loss to mean I cared more about myself. Actually I did care more about a scale number than myself. I'm rare in that I have been weight stable 10 years since the loss, but that's because I have accepted both mind and body as true co-equals.

Well done! I myself had to go the surgical route, because my spine was beginning to crumble at an alarming rate. The doctor needed me to get the weight off quickly. I'm still in constant pain, but it's not getting worse anymore. Mind you I still have bad days, but I've got hope.

There is no right way to do it. Like many things in life is we should not be ashamed to seek help, it's the best path. I was a swimmer that trained all my life for competition, so I used that an early training tech (heart band & watch) before the current tech to do it.
