No matter what industry, producing robust software requires a thorough V&V and test program. Whether the Iowa contractor or or , "test as you fly, fly as you test."

Sudden flashes of radio waves (fast radio bursts) appear from all direction in deep space. Nobody knows what they are--and the latest attempt to track one down has only deepened the mystery.

Betelgeuse has dimmed below mag 1.6. It's noticeable by just comparing to Bellatrix despite their different colours. No, not likely going supernova but very cool to watch the variation of a prominent star.

Why have the probes survived nearly a half century in deep space? Well, they were designed and constructed meticulously for longevity. Also, 1970s megalithic electronics is more tolerant of cosmic radiation than today's. Plus redundancy thru-out.

Continuing my early digital work, in 1996 I made one of the first images of an Earthlike 'exoplanet', Tau Bootis, which was widely published in the media. Carl Sagan took a special interest in this.

Spitzer's Final Look 👁️ On its last day of science ops, the telescope's final observation measured our solar systems's dust, and then made a vital calibration measurement by closing a shutter that had been open since launch.

on January 30th. The first image of the new Mars apparition. Syrtis Major is nicely on view with a bright Hellas basin to the south. The Martian atmosphere is clear and free of dust - i sincerely hope it stays that way this time around!

No, its unlikely Betelgeuse is going supernova any day soon. This data shows roughly a 20 year cycle of luminosity dips. This is the dimmest drop in recent time (125 y). Kudos to tweets and all those observers.

Our understanding of the effects of the tilt of the Mars' spin axis on its polar caps and its atmosphere is now more definitive. A new paper supports the theory proposed early on by the cofounder of the Planetary Society ().

How did unveil the universe? It studied the cosmos in infrared light as one of 's Great Observatories. Looking in infrared allows us to see distant galaxies and peer through dust to reveal baby stars, planets, and so much more.

In May 2009, scientists using Spitzer data produced the first "weather map" of an , charting temp variations over gas giant HD 189733 b. The study also revealed that roaring winds likely whip through the planet's atmosphere.

The M7.7 Jamaican quake produced sideways motion on the fault, so the tsunami risk is low. (Seafloor should move up to make tsunami.) But if I'm ever at the beach and feel strong shaking, I move to high ground. Downside is I lose a day at the beach. The upside could be my life.

Today is 's🛰️ 6,000th day of science. After 16+ years in space, our explorer's mission ends Jan. 30. Just as discoveries are still being made from Kepler's🛰️ data, Spitzer's legacy will continue with its data archive.
