"This system call is extremely dangerous" ;) The metadata interactions make it a bit hard to use. I wish the docs were a bit more precise about what it can and what it can not be used for. Reading source doesn't guarantee behaviour won't change...

Yeah, a fbarrier() (and for memory mapped maybe mfbarrier() - for LOLs obviously) would be nice. Maybe less important now with less spinning rust

For file systems, there would be no difference since they can’t control write ordering at the layers below. Thus they’d have to do a full fsync to simulate it.
