even rsync doesn't actually read back from disk for verification, right?

That makes it use MD5 to check for differences instead of only the quick check (modification time, file size) so running it twice will verify it worked the first time.

The documentation claims it *always* verifies that the data was sent correctly, even without --checksum: "Note that rsync always verifies that each transferred file was correctly reconstructed [...] has nothing to do with this option’s before-the-transfer [...] check."
