First, the Chrome OS thing is both false and not germane. The rest just feels very FUDy. Yes, what I'm suggesting would open up a new hole. However, it is narrowly defined as additional exposure (i.e. read vs. blind GET) to *already* vulnerable systems.
can you give some examples of specific uses of this pattern that you'd want to replace?

I can't immediately come up with any examples where getting rid of the proxy wouldn't have some annoying side effects

image search by URL: you could let the client download the image and then upload it to the search engine, but especially with asymmetric down/up link speeds on customer internet connections, that might be much slower
