How do you identify a great developer? When asked a question, they answer, then add "However, please verify, don't trust me."
that may be good for finding people who know things, but that's not the same as being a good developer

I think Eric's underlying argument here is, and from my experience I fully agree, that everybody absolutely sucks at building software most of the time. The good developers are the ones that know this. And they tell you, you can't trust anything that is not tested and verified.
