Sure the maintainers can keep up but getting new contributors to set up their e-mail address correctly is an uphill battle.

Oh and then there's the fact that LKML itself is more like a convenient archive than a place for discussion. Just sending a patch to LKML is screaming into the void.

get_maintainers.pl will usually show you which mailing list to go to but there's lots of files which don't have a maintainer.
