so moving into our new apartment, we called up comcast asking to transfer service. straightforward. they tell us the place already has service! someone forgot to cancel? so we'll need to wait. we check with the front desk, who calls the previous renters. they said they cancelled

now it gets weird. we plug in the modem and router.... and it works. we have service. no, not using the neighbors wifi, the ethernet works. but then it gets weirder. we call them up, they tell us it's been cancelled this morning, and we can transfer now. here's the instructions

bonus points: the service is supposed to be tied to your modem, so you can't just plug in an arbitrary modem and get service. it does not make sense that were ever able to get service whatsoever.

and it's DSL, not cable, right? because cable is shared medium, so moving the modem in a given area should just work, right?
