If Yahoo contracted it they didn't have to do it at kernel. In fact, more costly.

I have no inside knowledge (luckily), but to me writing kernel module feels cheaper than learning custom userspace software

I still think it would be easier to query the database directly, or do it as a DB shim. Gets you similar benefits. But who knows.

Maybe, but a kernel module doesn't surprise me too much. I did similar things in production to avoid certain risks & costs.

same here - bunch of attack-defense CTF binaries (without source) had system() injection

LD_PRELOAD'ed the same system() wrapper into all of them, didn't have to fiddle with any binary stuff

of course, the QA standards for a big mail system should be slightly higher than those for CTFs...
