A thing someone said to me recently that's stuck with me was that I was one of the few people in tech they knew who lived in the bay area as if I planned on staying here, and it had never occurred to me that there was any other option

Many people move to other cities to attend university, with no plans of staying there after they've got their degree, right? I don't really see a qualitative difference to doing the same thing with a job, given how short employment at tech companies seems to sometimes be.

Just like you can spend five years at university to get a master's degree, you can spend five years at a tech company and, depending on where you're from, may afterwards have enough money to buy an entire house in your hometown
