Running your own mail server is like learning to ride a bike. Once you're 30 you don't do it anymore unless it's a hobby or you're training for something else

There are (IMO) legitimate motivations for running one's own mail server. Convenience, reliability and peace of mind are not among them :)
I personally just want to help preserve the open web - even considering moving the box back home... #whatcouldgowrong -
I do it because I want to have full synchronization of mailbox contents (including flag/label state), with no polling. And because I think that spam filtering, when done at all, should happen synchronously during the SMTP transaction.
