The moral isn't "Don't use systemd", the moral is "Write stuff in better languages than C". rsyslog doesn't exactly have an enviable security record either.

the way I see memory-safe languages, their value is highest in code that isn't inherently manually fiddling with security-critical data; like application code, or to a lesser degree, kernel drivers and filesystems. I think their value in stuff like memory management is smaller

but there's still a lot of value in that you can limit where memory unsafety could be i was working on this kernel and they made a conscious effort to verify the pointer originates from userspace memory. but they don't realize the implicit pointer dereference a few lines up...
