Given most laptops core-to-RAM-ratio, and the RAM-hungry habits of most compilers, make -j on an unknown codebase is a form of russian roulette these days....

alias make='killmefirst make'
~$ cat bin/killmefirst
#!/bin/sh
echo 1000 > /proc/self/oom_score_adj
$@
because "make -j64" is great until make starts running 64 linker instances in parallel and suddenly all your RAM is gone
