i'm making cheesecake, and i needed some melted butter for the crust our microwave has a button for just such an occasion so i put a stick of butter in a bowl and gave it a whirl The butter exploded

Microwaves heat things from the inside out by exciting the water in them. (Part of why they're so great for popcorn.) Most food is I guess porous enough to let the steam out so it doesn't explode? Although for a fun time, put a potato in and forget to poke holes in it

the parts I find most <s>interesting</s>horrible about them: the thing where you get hot and cold spots from wave interference, and the part where liquid water absorbs better than ice, so already-liquid water gets hot quickly while ice stays ice
