It's all automated, so they have no reason not to send a follow-up. I've had people send five or six follow-ups with increasingly idiotic content like: "Just wanted to make sure you haven't been kidnapped by ninja kittens, please reply to let me know!" (not even exaggerating...)

Modern high-end spam is called "lead generation" and a thousand startups have developed ways to make it "look like" it came from a human so that it gets past spam filters and (they hope) receives a reply. It's probably illegal under CAN-SPAM but there's no enforcement. :/
