Why social media is crap: There are only two communication speeds which work for humans. 1) Near real-time, where you can correct things quickly, clarify points easily, etc. (Chat) 2) So slow that you aren't mad anymore by the time you're done writing (letters, maybe email)

and non-realtime communication means that, to keep the number of round-trips low, it's necessary to make guesses about the reactions of the recipient, and preemptively reply to those. which means the sender's image of the recipient leaks into the communication very strongly

most visible, I think, in mailing list discussions where person A sends a set of questions, and person B replies with individual answers where half of the answers are "see reply above" or "see reply below" because half the questions were actually redundant

(but those are normally technical discussions where this just leads to a little bit of wasted time, rather than people getting mad at each other)
