Google Chrome store distributes a sketchy extension that operates over the top of your browser and any privacy controls that websites can implement, so let's write the headline about Facebook and lead with a picture of Zuck. :/https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/11/facebook-private-groups-breast-cancer-privacy-loophole.html …

Brad, are you arguing that this wasn't a serious privacy issue on Facebook's end? There's nothing special about the Chrome extension—any browser extension or automation mechanism can do this. Surely you're not claiming the server is somehow protected by client-side JavaScript?

if the user's agent forwards data the user is legitimately allowed to see to a third party, that's not really the website's fault - unless you argue that this information should not be visible to the user in the first place

is your point that you expect facebook to provide groups whose members can only see each other under pseudonymous identities?

No. The article clearly states that "member lists for these closed groups were available publicly." That's a very serious privacy issue that has nothing to do with the choice of user agent. The extension certainly facilitates the abuse, but it's not the root cause or only vector.

oh, wait. is the article about two completely separate things? a data-scraping Chrome extension and changes in Facebook access controls?

was the scraping extension for grabbing the member list of a group that you're already a member of or a group that you're not a member of?

According to the article it was for any group, regardless of membership. It seems that Facebook recently changed this, but at the time of the report group membership was public.
