IMO, our situation is similar to discovering a new, uninhabited continent in the present day. Decisions made in the near-term future would have outsized influence on the long-term destiny of that continent. The continent just happens to be the universe.

But we discovered the universe long ago, and we are still far from able to colonize off Earth.

The relevant part of the analogy is the sudden transition to being able to act in a meaningful way. Even in this analogy, most individuals will be too concerned with their lives to bother making a difference. But a few will immediately take a personal stake in the new world.
