i meant that developing web services required a huge mindset shift from batch/offline processing and desktop software and i also mean younger engineers have an easier time with it as they're less baked in to writing desktop apps people like the back button now

i joke about payroll systems being a bad influence a bunch, especially in dbs the requirements on a db from a web server are terrifyingly different and you learn that you can't take it offline like you can with payroll, and that access paths end up mattering more than schema

but when you shipped on a golden disc, or to end desktop users in the 90's there was this idea that software would be finished rather than unending alerts and staff turnover from burnout

anyway it's like social factors matter & the way in which we use and share third have radically changed many of the problems involved in distribution

turns out the hard problems in keeping a website running aren't directly connected to how easy it would be to publish your code in a textbook

the cleanest codebase i've ever encountered was in a startup with zero customers everything was pristine, formatted, decomposed, i mean it didn't work operationally but the tests passed

clean code is just code that does it's best to pretend it's solving an interesting problem
