i meant that developing web services required a huge mindset shift from batch/offline processing and desktop software and i also mean younger engineers have an easier time with it as they're less baked in to writing desktop apps people like the back button now

i joke about payroll systems being a bad influence a bunch, especially in dbs the requirements on a db from a web server are terrifyingly different and you learn that you can't take it offline like you can with payroll, and that access paths end up mattering more than schema

the cleanest codebase i've ever encountered was in a startup with zero customers everything was pristine, formatted, decomposed, i mean it didn't work operationally but the tests passed
