You have this 29-year-old guy on your campaign, true believer, enormous talent and resume: Princeton, Harvard Law, debate champ, SCOTUS clerk, forgoing a six-digit salary to work for you. But he’s rough around the edges. Didn’t go to the right high schools, son of immigrants. /2

But for crying out loud, it’s not like the Republican bench is so deep. If he’s being a jerk, and rubbing people the wrong way, why the hell isn’t someone sitting R.T. Cruz down and saying “Kid, you’re an enormous talent, but everyone hates you because of XYZ.” Mentor him! /3

All of these stories have no specifics, it’s just a general sense of obnoxiousness or nerdery or arrogance. So no one unforgivable incident demonstrating lack of character. Why isn’t an old hand taking the 29-yo Cruz under his wing and fixing that instead of playing Mean Girls?/4

That Cruz got buried in a crummy mid-level FTC job in 2001 and STILL clawed his way into a career as a SCOTUS advocate and then Senator shows what the Bush admin missed out on in its WASPy frat-boy snobbishness. And Stevens is bragging about this complete failure on his part./x

I personally gave up on Cruz in 2016 after he flipped for Trump; he clearly has personality conflicts in the Senate today; I agree with the
@EsotericCD take of Cruz as Vizzini. But I have to wonder what might have been if he had been appropriately groomed and trained in 2000. /6Show this thread -
(Correction. Cruz was an ADAG for five months, and then moved to FTC OPP. His LinkedIn profile is amusingly still written as if he’s a BigLaw partner trying to generate business, and can’t find anything notable to say about his brief DOJ tenure.)

Is Stuart Stevens really the guy to give likeability tutoring though?

Stuart Stevens, again showing off his excellent character judgment and choice of associations. Sure, John Weaver solicited teens and everyone at the Lincoln Project covered for him. But at least they weren't annoying about it.

Dammit Ted. Taking away my guiltless Cruz hate-on and making me sympathize with the guy? What’s next? My hero worship of JFK?
