The question is what the benefit of skepticism in this case really is. What is and is not an overreaction is established only in retrospect. From a game theoretic standpoint this is pretty clear cut tbh. How much money did you spend over the last 30 years on toiletpaper ?

I agree that this is much worse and much more dangerous than 1976 swine flu. It’s not even clear to me that the government overreacted to swine flu, though that was certainly the contemporaneous conventional wisdom.
