For a NYT editorial writer to selectively edit this quote—and to omit the President’s explicit commitment “WE WILL BE BACKING YOU”—which was the very next sentence, is deceptive & affirmatively misleading. That doesn't make it better! The federal government needs to be coordinating this and making sure the resources go where they are most needed - not encouraging 50 governors to work on their own.

Of freakin' course we should encourage Governors to act on their own! They were elected to be executives of the states they serve, not some meaningless figureheads waiting for an adult to tell them what to do.
