You quote a mighty and historic speech by the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass, but, without context, many modern readers will misunderstand. Two critical points: twitter.com/Kaepernick7/st

“I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from ‘the Declaration of Independence,’ the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age.”

Let me encourage everyone, READ THE ENTIRE SPEECH; it is powerful, inspirational, and historically important in bending the arc of history towards justice: rbscp.lib.rochester.edu/2945

What strikes me about his speech is the fact that he was acknowledging the greatness of the country and of its founders. He was admonishing them that slavery was beneath their dignity. He declared that if the chains were removed, he'd join the nation's jubilee. And so he did. -VJ

And what were the tendencies to which Douglass referred? "Customs of hurtful character could formerly fence themselves in," he continued. "But a change has now come over the affairs of mankind. Walled cities and empires have become unfashionable." bit.ly/2JfUerX

Teddy, son, it doesn’t stop there. Read what the obvious tendencies were—the influences of other nations and the spread of knowledge around the world.

Did you take the time read Mr. Douglas’s speech that day. I’ll answer for you no you didn’t because I’m farely sure it was too long for someone with a short attention span to hang with. You’d rather tire off ad hominem attacks. That is not a tactic Mr. Douglas employed.

He also didn’t foresee that America would have racism so ingrained in its fabric that it would take another 100 years to get black people rights to vote and drink from the same water fountain. How dare you act as if America is even close to being equal for all?

1) i think you are jumping the gun on this one, neither the senator nor Mr Douglas made that claim. I think both realize we are a work in progress. Mr. Douglas was hopeful because of the relative youthfulness of the country and said as much in his speech.
