The bottom line: inequality is unchanged. Two, conflating individual and corporate tax payers is absurd. Three, increase in taxpayers at the bottom end means that when you use taxpayers alone you are overstating inequality. Let me explain the last point.
Suppose you have 10 people out of 100 paying taxes. If you use tax data alone, you are misrepresenting inequality. Now, suppose the 11th person became a taxpayer. He/she is likely at the bottom rung. Now, the tax data will show even greater income skew, which would be misleading.
From a broader perspective, inequality has indeed increased in India over the past 30 years of liberalization. The upper end have been able to benefit more. However, unlike in the West, growth has also helped bring poverty down sharply.
There are many reasons why the society has become unequal but one of them is the skyrocketing price of land. High land prices inhibit various types of low-end activities, reducing income opportunities.
