What, you don’t feel that DeepMind gave you adequate resources (or at least a lower effort-to-resources ratio than academia)?

There's a different kind of hustle necessary when trying to find alignment, secure resources, and demonstrate progress on large scale scientific projects.
-
Agreed. Not saying it’s easy. But I like to imagine how many amazing things we could all be doing/producing if we weren’t spending so much time trying to get bare minimum resources for our work. Those places show that potential IMHO.

To some extent, we impose the hustle mindset on ourselves. Lots of PIs complaining have labs with 5+ trainees. Run a leaner lab, write fewer grants. This is obv more true for post-tenure scientists w/o a wet lab, but still true to some extent for all.
-
I know A LOT of PIs who run small light labs who still have to hustle hard (>4 grants a year) to stay afloat. Particularly so if the don’t work at “the right” schools or have “the right” pedigree.

All of them followed in the model established by Bell Labs. One building that has produced more Nobel Laureates than the entire country of Canada.

Yes, and the NIH intramural program too (although my colleagues at NIH rightly talk of their own administrative challenges)

Can you explain this in numbers, e.g. for DeepMind?
