Or said less compactly: "Method M applied to important problem X exhibits issue Y. This paper presents method M', which solves issue Y based on the insight W." 2/2

Similarly, I see papers that begin with, "There has been little research thus far on X." The fact that X hasn't been investigated much is not a sound scientific reason for investigating it. Maybe it hasn't been investigated because it isn't an important or interesting problem.
-
True. Which is why it always has to be paired with good argument why it may be important. So, "X has the following implications for Y that may be important but X is not well understood and under-researched" would be valid I think

Ya know sometimes as an engineer you build a really cool thing as a grad student and then WTH you have to write a thing about it with an intro and a discussion and you want me to put it into words I didn't go into engineering because I can write good.
-
Too bad. Technical writing is part of your profession.

If the only reason the authors are doing that work is because they wanted to join the throngs and work on the "popular" problem, perhaps it is good that they are letting us know, no?

It has to do with hype and funding. In my country, many funding agencies are giving money to "hot" themes, such as "industry 4.0", IoT, artificial intelligence... Then, as a survival strategy, people research popular things, not important things.

In my experience this is forced by advisors (and in an indirect way the funding source). The _whyyy_ of choosing to study something gets far too much value in academia. We need a culture where "because I think it's cool" is a valid reason to do science.
-
It surely is worth explaining to the reader why something is cool?

Mostly agree but salience can be relevant: “lots of research is making the following error” is different from “an obscure sub field sometimes does this badly”. But that’s a minority of cases.
