Since @SheilaKatz1 raised the issue of Manels at and asked @JGreenblattADL @IrwinCotler and @DavidHarrisAJC to take the No-Manel Pledge, I thought I’d reiterate why this individual commitment is so necessary and powerful a tool in advancing gender equity.

It happens because conference organizers go first to the first names they think of: their professional network & the names they know. They often want big names. And so the folks with public profile get more attention, & thus more profile. It’s self-reinforcing.pic.twitter.com/CjdUsiH8Dg

Filling your conference agenda this way is natural. It also tends to exacerbate & reinforce existing gender inequities. (And it makes your conference more boring for attendees, since they tend to end up listening to the same folks on the same topics again & again over time!)

The absence of women speakers on topics where excellent women are working, because organizers invite those who come easily to mind, is unconscious bias at work. ...built networks, set up websites, published in the right places, added their names to multiple binders full of women, & asked their friends to recommend them. That hasn’t worked very well, because event organizers can’t overcome their unconscious bias until it’s made conscious.

The plain fact is, men who get speaking invitations and care about gender equity need to do this one thing, to break a longstanding, ugly cycle that keeps their valued women colleagues out of prominence and leadership. Please just do it. Sign up now:https://www.genderavenger.com/blog/sign-the-genderavenger-pledge-youll-be-in-good-company …

Oh, and since this was prompted by a
@Conf_of_Pres event and since I know@Daroff is a smart guy committed to social justice, I am tagging him here so he can read the whole thread and address gender equity directly with CoP staff and member organizations.Prikaži ovu nit
