"Even though it's primarily an adventure movie, it has a comedic, goofy quality that I think sets it apart from a lot of the films that were made at the time. It's, it's kind of a screwball adventure." on GUNGA DIN ('39).
See it this weekend on the #TCMEssentials.

Gunga Din, is a good movie.
I'll be watching.
How about 'Beau Geste' (1939) with Gary Cooper?

In my top 5 films of all time. Such a great film. My grandparents were friends of Eduardo Ciannelli (Head Guru) and came over from Naples on the same boat with him.
Are you serious? Cary Grant may be funny, but they make fun of Gunga Din, who is played by a white man in dark makeup. The movie is not funny and there is nothing goofy about it.

the whole point is in the final lines: "though i've belted you and flayed you, by the living god that made you, you're a better man than i am gunga din" they mock his spirit but admit he is what we should all be.
also Cary and Victor McLaglen are objectively funny throughout

This would be a great film to contextualise in a disclaimer/spoken intro or a panel discussion similar to the one held recently at TCMFF about Gone With The Wind. Gunga Din is a good film but it’s also racist AF. A good opportunity to expand on the discussions started with GWTW!
