Inside each of us is a little boy, a shy, lovesick girl with a curse, a demon made of fire, and a shape-shifting wizard with no heart.

It’s strange that I, you, any of us don’t actually know how many people we know who died from COVID-19, especially friends on here, unless we were lucky enough to know their next of kin. Some people we know just went away and are never coming back. This is just part of our world.

“There’s an earnestness to rallies that claws at your heart. They are about anger, yes, but they’re also about optimism — otherwise why not be angry at home? — and optimism feels to me like the very tenderest underbelly you can show” -⁦

This post is a little bit different for me since I’m asking for comments from paid subscribers about how they’d make e-bookstores different (or as book people are good at doing, explain to me why they CAN’T be different because of reasons XYZ)

The thing I keep coming back to is that a big part of what makes books special are libraries and bookstores, and everything about how e-readers and e-books work now make e-libraries and e-bookstores very stagnant and boring. So if I were to make things different, I’d start there.

Sometimes I wonder what e-readers and e-bookstores would be like, even if they weren’t the perfect Libraries of Babel of my dreams, but just a little closer to what, idk, watching TV with a set-top box is like right now

This appearance from 1997 manages to be both very unfair to poor Courtney Thorne-Smith and very, very funny

I think about these two and a half pages from Norm Macdonald’s book constantly. When I reviewed it, I wrote that they would “make for a fine eulogy”—and I swear I didn’t mean anything by it. But they do.

Norm MacDonald on battles with cancer: “I’m pretty sure, I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That’s not a loss. That’s a draw.”

I don’t know if I would actually enjoy living in the 1990s again, but I think it could be fun to take a vacation there

There was something too volatile about it to really work as an everyday thing, but when all the comedic forces aligned, it was something to behold. He was just funny, and fast, and made fast, funny stuff better, whether it seemed smart or dumb. There aren’t many who can do that.

I think my favorite Norm MacDonald memories were his Conan O’Brien appearances. He would tell long, elaborate stories that were really just frames for very old jokes as if they had actually happened to him. And then he would sit/react to the other guests like an extra sidekick.

We make jokes about what celebrities say on here even when it’s not vaguely lewd total nonsense; this was just a case of teeing it right the fuck up

What were we supposed to do, all solemnly digest the news of a cousin’s friends allegedly vaccine-induced swollen testicles and cancelled wedding and then say, “I see; if I’d lost the wedding of a good friend of a family member that way, I would also look for more information”

Sorry to nicki minaj’s cousin’s friend whose alibi for getting swollen nuts and having his wedding called off is about to fall apart under the intense scrutiny of the global media.

Nothing is funnier than imagining a crying man with giant testicles eating a whole wedding cake by himself

I miss post-rock. I miss when Canadian Marxists, Christian sentimentalists, and dudes from Chicago who were deep into Dionne Warwick were cohesive enough to make a genre because they all played the xylophone

I think about this a lot with regards to NYT 9/11 web projects, like 102 Minutes.
