The issue is extremely complex and full of pitfalls. It doesn't make sense to rush into legalisation now, if a little later the sales outlets have to close again because we forgot something. This is not a law that you can just shake off your sleeve. (2/7)

However, there is already a lot of preparatory work that we can build on, such as the Greens' draft for a cannabis control law (Cannabiskontrollgesetz). (3/7)

Abroad people are watching very closely. If we want a new drug policy internationally that focuses more on health protection and regulation and less on repression, we cannot afford any mistakes. That's why we have to talk to many stakeholders and work out the law properly. (4/7)

But one thing is clear: before the end of this legislative period, there should be a law that will make it legal, but controlled and safe for adults to buy cannabis in Germany. That is what the coalition agreement says, and we will stick to it. (5/7)

The aim of the coalition partners is to ensure that the entire supply chain can be transparently traced - from the plant to the point of sale. That is why there is a lot to be said for allowing cannabis cultivation in Germany under strict rules. (6/7)

Possibly we can also include other European countries in the cultivation. In any case, we must not repeat the mistake of the Netherlands. Our neighbours have legalised cannabis without caring where the substance comes from. This has strengthened organised crime enormously. (7/7
