Why is it crazy? non-profit != charity. Linux has immense value and I suppose at least some part of the compensation is intended to make sure the people that keep it running stay there and don't run off somewhere else.

I agree about what you say about a non-profit not needing to be charity, but with such salaries the least they could do is not use donations for that.
No, I mean donations like https://bgr.com/2016/11/16/microsoft-linux-foundation-2016-donation/ … which result in tax breaks, the same tax breaks which the LF enjoys in general
And regardless of where donations are directly invested in, they indirectly contribute to allow such salaries, since they provide indirect liquidity
