This is amazing, Windows Defender used the open source unrar code, but changed all the signed ints to unsigned for some reason, breaking the code. @halvarflake noticed and got it fixed. Remote SYSTEM memory corruption 😨https://twitter.com/ProjectZeroBugs/status/981562931178389505 …

Reminds of the time Google Picasa (desktop client) took my Google Image Search BMP parser and replaced the unsigned ints with signed ones. Kind of the inverse :-)

I've actually seen other vendors make subtle changes to unrar, one time a vendor changed all the strncpy to strcpy ⁉️https://twitter.com/taviso/status/676415513270968321 …

That level of in-depth, concentrated and highly focussed analysis comes naturally with our open floor office concept. But some might argue @halvarflake is just good with the cybers.

well i get why you might want to try to switch to only unsigned ints but i also get why that may cause unexpected issues if you’re not careful :)

Except a lot of operations and overflow/underflow are UB/unspecified for signed integers. Have to be careful either way.
