Assuming you're using IE, disabling auto-config is not sufficient? Works for me as long as it's not handed out/forced via Group Policy (as expected). I.e. if it's just DHCP based

It's actually a bug that you can enable WPAD.

In windows in 2007, there were 5 different resolvers handling wpad stuff. (IE, windows update, others i forget.) Copy pasta code, i dont think the MS teams ever succeeded in patching all of them... ( src: talking to MS after kiwicon 1 & http://wpad.co.nz )

Why is it not a bug that proxies are still even supported? Even moreso auto-config.

We named a notebook WPAD and put it in the HackingAtRandom network back in 2009. lots of hackers with autoconfig enabled used this little proxy without noticing. Registering dyn. hostnames is bad and I think Windows now has a blacklist for that.

Edit your drivers\etc\hosts file and add wpad to resolve to localhost.

Doesn't work, DHCP options can override it.
