Very serious question: can the interpreter be updated automatically by Avast just pushing an update or will manual intervention by the user be required?

It can be updated by Avast, they can include engine updates in regular definition updates. As far as I know updates will be seamless, thankfully!

why did you port to Linux then use ida on Windows to remote debug? why not just debug the dll directly
