That too. Apple is an international company, you can expect Russia and China to request the keys too under their legal process.

OK, but sticking to this argument, why can't Apple just say no? Russia could send a warrant requesting what the FBI wanted in San Bernardino today, no?

I guess, I think I buy this argument although it's not as strong as the "things are worse" one. I think it's not as strong because these scenarios are already possible today, and not happening? Like, Russia could demand the signed blob the FBI wanted already, right?

I’m sure they do. It’s easy for Apple to say no as long as its “no” for everyone. Once it is “no unless I like you” it’s over.

I think it's a weaker argument because today we're already relying on Apple doing the right thing, and the argument goes that maybe they'll stop that if we make them use key escrow... but why?

It's easy to say "We can't help you" when the information isn't available, or risks the world than when its finely scoped.

Right, but the FBI described what they wanted - IIRC a signed firmware blob that removes the delay between PIN entries - they could easily build that?

That’s one of many things they have asked for.

To be clear, I'm sold that key escrow is a bad idea, but I really think the strong argument is the exploits one - but maybe that's because I work on that problem

That's another argument, should companies take the blame for intelligence services not keeping up? But then when they do keep up, oh no, Shadow Brokers leak.
