I'd always assumed that was one of the more important features of a VPN, after protecting you from hostile local networks.

I think the most important feature is probably the generous margins from reselling bandwidth

Turning on never http has been very valuable for me. Turns out that there aren't that many websites I want/need to visit that aren't https. Still a problem due the fact that eSNI is a joke.

Very true, but that's a real solution, and we're getting there and making progress. Mozilla claiming that proxying your traffic through a bandwidth reseller is just as effective only harms that effort.
