Surprised to see Mozilla has started peddling VPN services.

It is. Let's not gloss over the fact that is a problem.

I'd always assumed that was one of the more important features of a VPN, after protecting you from hostile local networks.

Someone explain for a dummy (me)? Seems reasonable

It doesn't make security sense, but is very profitable. You can resell cheap bandwidth at a markup with very little overhead, which has lead to an explosion in providers (you've probably seen the ads). This summary is mostly accurate.https://gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29 …

@mozilla 's privacy push lacks coherence. The worst part is DoH as an opt-out feature in Firefox... ISPs/Wifi can still see which sites you access (they don't need DNS to do that). And it diverts hapless users into a relationship with a for-profit third party they didn't ask for. -
The 2nd worst part is that VPN services make DoH redundant & Mozilla doesn't care? I would even say the VPN option is the "right way" to protect privacy if certain conditions are met. But DoH will provide a false sense of security to ppl who might have sought a reputable VPN.

I think that's it. Once we solve the other tracking vectors, IP addresses, especially v6, still have very small anonymity sets, and trackers will migrate to that.

VPN marketing is shameful but thanks to all the NordVPN ads on YouTube, they've shaped consumer expectations.

Seems like an odd track given their support of encrypted web for all with
@letsencrypt, moving forward on TLS v1.3 w/ encrypted SNI and even their hard push of DoH, adding a vpn service just seems redundant and a bit silly and helps fewer people.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
