It turns out you need "golden keys" to open it, and to get them - I'm not making this up - you need to follow the CEO of the game publisher on twitter, and occasionally he tweets out codes you type in (??). 2/nhttps://twitter.com/DuvalMagic/status/1183133038630391813 …

If you asked me to build this system, the codes would be randomly generated and inserted into a database with their attributes (reward, expiry date, etc). However, I noticed the codes are clearly not random, some are visually quite similar. Here are two examples. 3/npic.twitter.com/CtXaZgLuuB

Like all things gaming related, fans have recorded all these codes in excruciating detail, so there's a big sample of codes to analyze. For example, http://orcz.com/Borderlands_2:_Golden_Key#SHIFT_codes …. Some things are immediately apparent. 4/n

They use the alphabet "3569BCFHJKRSTWXZ". That's 4 bits per char, 25 chars, so 100 bits of data. Quick analysis shows some data is encoded, I plotted bit frequency by position and can see some sections are evenly distributed (perhaps crc/low order timestamp/etc) 5/n

Others sections clearly encode attributes. I imported the list that fans had made and started trying to organize which bits were common between codes with similar properties (platform, expiry, game, etc). 6/n

Then it was Sunday evening, and I realized I had spent more time working on this than actually playing the game

I kinda find the golden crate guns ruin the game, they're so OP...

If you were talking about BL2 or TPS I’d agree. Every gun I’ve got from the gold chest in BL3 has been crap in comparison to what I got from world drops.

One of my biggest issues with the game is in fact the huge variety of weapons. I feel they tried to make a game, but gave up at some point, and just released everything they had done.

I completely disagree. That’s the whole point of this game is to get loot. Borderlands 3 is awesome for having so many guns in the game and it gives it variety while giving the ability for players to find the weapon they like and play to their own unique style.
