If you want to snoop on DNS queries, you should get permission from the owner. Period. The mental gymnastics to rationalize not needing permission, or claim that isn't the issue have been quite impressive.
I'm worried you're trying to rationalize not needing permission in a case where you very clearly do, by complicating the definition of ownership. This issue is simplistic, there is no need to complicate it. You probably need permission.

Your worry is unfounded, I believe consent to monitoring is very important. But you're being really simplistic by saying "Ask the owner" when in reality ownership is muddy at best sometimes.

Don't worry, you cannot have too much permission to snoop.
