Seems like the dns loggers are getting worried. Their arguments make zero sense, if they own the endpoints they can just disable it. If they don't own them, but they're certain they add value, then users will opt-in. If neither of those are true, then quit your snooping.

How do I disable it on the endpoint? Malware doesn’t follow Group Policy.

Are you trolling, or are you really asking me to explain why changing DNS settings won't prevent malware?

I’m asking a perfectly legitimate question about how to filter outbound traffic on an endpoint from arbitrary DNS stacks designed to evade inspection.

Most of the major malware families don't use it though. If they don't want to use it, they don't need to. There is no reason to think DNS Over HTTP provides any capabilities that didn't already exist.

We see enormous value in DNS monitoring and alerting daily and it’s a fantastic layer for what we are looking for. And yes tunneling has always been possible but it’s another layer an attacker has to stand up.

Do you own the endpoints? Then no problem, you can monitor whatever you wish. If it's not your endpoint, then that value should only be extracted from users with permission. Why is that so controversial?

Because infosec doesn't think "users" are people. They're an abstraction to be tolerated, manipulated, and controlled. It's in the stories we tell, our documentation, the way we work. So if there's a thing that makes security harder but benefits users - it's a tough sell.

I think some amount of push backof it comes from the fact that the binary nature of “ownership” breaks down in practice. Though admittedly the environments I’ve worked in may be edge cases.

I think that is way there been a huge center stage on privacy vs security and more emphasis on governance... Some departments getting told: You own the data, we are here to make sure your doing it right and protect you. Let us help you.

Tavis (first I love your posts and fully respect you) but did you know when you don't post for (it's short like) 24-36 hours the Twitter alert comes in Tavis "hasnt posted recently." That is how much I find you a staple of this platform and its learning your frequencies of posts.
