Impressive! [a small suggestion - something that adds a lot of value, yet is still somewhat niche, is the maximization of the interger comparison "goodness" (cmp cov in honggfuzz, value profile in libfuzzer), wondering if that's something you'd like to analyze in future as well]

Thanks!! Means a lot coming from the author of a main fuzzer :-)

In general, I wish I had been able to cover honggfuzz and LF more, but I wasn't able to find a technical documentation for them. Went through the code to be clear about some of design points. All the information is open, but it is disperse takes too much time to go through it.

More to the point, we mentioned Steelix "comparison progress" idea. TBH, I didn't know this was included in honggfuzz and LF (but I saw it was implemented in Kernel instrumentation as option).pic.twitter.com/z2TvkNRdDB

We could make a subsection on it but the results from Steelix are positive but not so impressive. Is your experience different?

I don't have any hard data at hand, but in the past (with mutations only) I had to provide the input corpus to get anywhere, with cmp instrumentation I have a feeling that I can start with no inputs at all. Eg. it very quickly creates semi-valid (with checksums disabled) PNGs 1/2

Essentially it makes up for the lack of dictionaries (those might be incomplete, or hard to make upfront). BTW, I forgot to mention, but what I meant by cmp comparision is also strcmp/memcmp/and_friends instrumentation: if (!strcmp(&input[x], "wh\xFFev\xB7r")) {} 2/2

Then (I think) it's more general than Steelix. It goes in the direction of afl-lafintel of breaking branch into several so the fuzzer can "sense" it's progress.

I'll look into adding another sentence(s) in this sense.

I did some early work in this area, my implementation was "sub-instruction profiling" (around 2009), I found some success. I presented it at a few conferences at the time, along with "corpus distillation" (I think you call it minsetting, but I never heard that term)

Was the one you gave a talk about in Cracow back in in ~2009? You know, it was ten years ago :), might be a good time to revisit .pl - I hear @gynvael is organizing best haxxoor-targeted conferences in .pl now :) (and there will be parties:).

Just a note that half of these conferences are in Polish ;) The other half (CONFidence) is in English though!
