I have very poorly defined fingerprints, so scanners very rarely work for me. I can't use the scanners in phones, but that's a pretty minor inconvenience. The big problem is immigration checkpoints, over the years the problem has got worse as more of the checking is automated.

A well-known trick for people like me is rubbing beeswax on your fingers, it can make the machines happier. They usually have some at customs but didn't today - so I got stuck in secondary screening

So, while waiting the Niagara border before I got a Canadian passport I was chatting to a friendly US immigration guy, he told me this story About a year previous a man wanted to visit the US & presented his passport Unfortunately he was a convicted & discharged felon /1

Which because his conviction included a drugs charge meant he was denied entry The mantatory requirement then is to take all his biometrics & return h to Canadian soil Unfortunately though due to an prison 'accident' he had lost both hands thus could not be fingerprinted /2

This meant that migration was forced to hold him in custody until Canadian consulate authorities could arrange for his repatriation, which too two more days /3

I guess I'm lucky it's only ever cost me an hour or so delay
