I have very poorly defined fingerprints, so scanners very rarely work for me. I can't use the scanners in phones, but that's a pretty minor inconvenience. The big problem is immigration checkpoints, over the years the problem has got worse as more of the checking is automated.

It doesn’t surprise me about the border fingerprint readers (they are optical) but I am a bit surprised about the phone ones as they are (largely) subdermal imaging devices even if not great ones.

Yeah, I find phones work about 20% of the time for me, which is just too frustrating to use, especially in sub-optimal conditions. I need to convince someone in Android to make "recognizing Tavis more than 50% of the time" a hardware qualification

So, while waiting the Niagara border before I got a Canadian passport I was chatting to a friendly US immigration guy, he told me this story About a year previous a man wanted to visit the US & presented his passport Unfortunately he was a convicted & discharged felon /1
-
Which because his conviction included a drugs charge meant he was denied entry The mantatory requirement then is to take all his biometrics & return h to Canadian soil Unfortunately though due to an prison 'accident' he had lost both hands thus could not be fingerprinted /2

travelling with beeswax will make you _very_ popular with .au or .nz biosecurity...

Was just thinking this. Though you could pass customs and simply declare it at quarantine (and they will likely confiscate it) so no harm done as long as you tick that box. Buy more when leaving the country.

Pretty elaborate setup
@taviso just so when customs asks, you can deliver the "I mind my own beeswax" line.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Does anyone know if the beeswax trick works after you've been climbing? my fingerprints are unrecognizable for about 2 days after going to the gym...

Have the same problem. A few years back I went bouldering, and then tried to pick up my US work visa in a US embassy the next day. Took like 20min for them to take a fingerprint that they considered sufficient. Lots of joking around about me having filed them off and such.
