A well-known trick for people like me is rubbing beeswax on your fingers, it can make the machines happier. They usually have some at customs but didn't today - so I got stuck in secondary screening
Guess I need to start carrying my own when I'm travelling!

I can use the scanners when my hands are warm but not when cold

-
I love the facilities in colder climates that have installed warmers on the hand scanners

I got a very irate border guard at Chicago who got annoyed at me for not being able to put all my fingers on the scanner at the same time. I have a joint condition, I physically can't make my fingers sit in that position. He was adamant I "just" had to move my fingers together.
-
In the end I had to use my other hand to press my fingertips down while I twisted the other fingers into place. Totally ridiculous.

Just an fyi, beeswax can appear as a false positive for explosives. My friend got a thorough screening one time when I sent some of mycomb Honey home with him.

Maybe carry a beeswax lipbalm stick?

or maybe the rosin used by violinists for their bows?

I understand, I have terrible issues getting my fingerprints to read. TSA precheck was fun.
