It's a hard concept to one of us. If you believe using free hotel wifi is "informed consent" to monitor all activity, then fine, but very very few other people believe that.

I keep jumping on it because normal users encounter that situation regularly. I think using wifi should be safe by default, without requiring reviewing privacy policies and making trust decisions.

Yes, I'm in favor of making a sane default trust decisions on behalf of users. It's not just about WiFi, I don't think Comcast or Time Warner Cable should be able to monitor your activity either. Adoption of TLS + DoH + eSNI can make that realistic.

This is insane, do you really argue that users are giving informed consent to be monitored when they use free WiFi? Let's be clear, you want to monitor users, and you object to DoH because you don't think users will opt-in to allowing you to monitor them.

Nobody is taking anything away from anyone. This is about choosing safe defaults. I'm opposed to any snooping at all.

If everyone wants to be monitored by their ISP, you have nothing to worry about, people will change the defaults. We both know nobody is giving informed consent though, so you probably should be worried
